Locked out? Here are some things that you can do.

girl locked out of perth houseThe reality is that if you always lock your doors and your keys are necessary in order to reenter your house, then at some point, you will probably lock yourself out. Nothing is quite as frustrating as being outside your own home looking in, wondering whether you unplugged all of your electrical appliances and thinking about all of the things you should be doing right now that you simply can’t. It may sound grim, but there’s really no need to panic. All you really need to do is make one quick call to to a professional locksmith service to fix your problem in no time.

Firstly, here’s what you can do to prevent this from happening to you:

These pieces of advice are useful only in advance, so if you find yourself locked out of your house now, feel free to skip this part.

1. Give a close friend or family member a spare key to your home.

Be sure to choose wisely when you decide whom to give the key to—the person entrusted with your spare house key should live fairly close to you, so that you can go to their house at a moment’s notice if necessary, but more importantly, he or she should be trustworthy.

2. You could hide your spare key someplace findable to you (but not to potential burglars).

This could however be potentially dangerous, as “professional” burglars know what to look for and where to look for it.

If it’s too late for this advice because you’re already locked out of your home:

1. Just call your landlord if you’re locked out during normal business hours.

Even if they don’t live on-site, they might be able to swing by and let you in relatively quickly.

2. You can also simply call a locksmith.

In order to avoid incurring additional costs with your landlord if the locksmith you call ends up damaging the door or lock, make sure the locksmiths you hire are certified, licensed and insured. Don’t yield to the temptation of hiring a slightly cheaper locksmith who isn’t insured or does not possess the appropriate certification. It may seem like a better deal at first, but you stand to spend a lot more money on repairing damage caused by an inexperienced locksmith, so the investment is more than worth it.

3. As a last resort, you can actually attempt to break into your own house.

If you’re on the first floor or a low second floor, you may be able to open an unlocked window and climb in. Another way to get into a place in an emergency is just destroying the doorknob, which can be effective in emergency situations. If your doors are not deadbolted shut, you can take a hammer and proceed to hit the knob, then removing the rest of the mechanism, thus freeing the door to swing open unimpeded. Of course this will mean you’ll need to replace the door knob, so this method should only be used in real emergencies.
